Schema therapy is an innovative, integrative therapy that expands beyond cognitive-behavioral therapy, incorporating additional aspects of attachment, Gestalt, object relations and emotion focused therapies. Designed to treat long standing emotional difficulties, schema therapy is a rich, deep therapy that provides a model of psychopathology, explaining etiology and clinical presentation. With an emphasis on altering deeply rooted life patterns and highly charged emotional schemas that have origins in childhood and adolescence, schema therapy is a mechanism of change.

Part 1 and Part 2 of Schema Therapy Tool Kit contains vibrant, colorful cue cards designed to guide sessions using a schema therapy framework. The 71 A5 cue cards in this step-by-step guide outline:

  • What is a schema?
  • How are schemas formed?
  • What is an early maladaptive schema?
  • The development of early maladaptive schemas
  • 5 core emotional needs
  • 18 early maladaptive schemas
  • Primary and secondary schemas
  • How we cope with maladaptive schemas
  • The 4 main types of Modes:
      • Child Modes
      • Parent Modes
      • Dysfunctional Coping Modes
      • Healthy Modes
  • A closer look at Dysfunctional Coping Modes and how coping this way perpetuates schemas
  • Challenging schemas and other cognitive interventions
  • Behavioral pattern breaking and bypassing unhealthy coping modes
  • Strengthening our Healthy Coping Modes
  • Experiential Interventions

Help clients identify maladaptive schemas and situations that are 'triggering'. Teach the origins of maladaptive schemas and introduce the concept of 5 core emotional needs. Deepen your clients understanding by providing striking visuals that represent your client's experience. Cue cards can be particularly effective when schemas present within the therapeutic setting or as prompts for clients when they are at home or work. When a maladaptive schema is identified, clients can then work to bring unconscious patterns of interacting, thinking and behaving into conscious awareness, making change possible.

Use the Mode cue cards to help clients identify dysfunctional coping strategies. The vibrant visuals can be used to enhance process work and deepen client's understanding of important therapeutic concepts. The visuals can be used as an immediate reminder in session when dysfunctional coping strategies emerge in situ, helping to break habitual patterns of responding. These techniques may be particularly beneficial with long standing emotional difficulties that have origins in childhood or adolescence.

The intervention cue cards provide additional resources to heal emotional wounds, guiding corrective emotional experiences and activities that seek to meet childhood unmet needs. Not only can these cards be used within a schema therapy framework but creative therapists can adapt the resources to emotion focused techniques, attachment theories and cognitive behavioral techniques.

Let our cards create those "aha" moments and do the talking for you!!
