Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy is an evidence-based psychotherapy model that views the mind as a system of parts and a core Self. Developed by Richard Schwartz in the 1990's, IFS assists people to access their protective and wounded internal parts. Using our true nature or "our seat of consciousness" (the Self) we can work with various parts that may be perpetuating unhelpful behaviors or ways of coping.
IFS hypothesizes that protective parts develop coping strategies to protect and shield us from the pain and burden held by traumatized parts (exiles). Exiles may often be young, formed in early childhood in response to adverse childhood experiences. The coping strategies utilized by our protectors, may no longer serve us despite their good intentions. IFS uses methods of self-compassion and curiosity to foster a non-judgmental view of the self.
